Welcome to the EW team, I hope you will dynamize the dev team. I love the product, it has a huge potential, and I was a disappointed by EW2 and its short list of improvements. Intellisense is the best code completion mechanism in the industry, regardless of platform. I just wish JavaScript support in EW were in part with, say, Eclipse (which I hate using).

The best of luck @ MS! Since an eventful summer and a few high-profile departures, it sounds like Microsoft is becoming more nimble and pro-active: no doubt the addition of your talent was part of that long term strategy!

The ResizeDirection property is not necessarily required. It defaults to Auto. When ResizeDirection is set to Auto, the splitter code looks at the alignment properties to figure out how to resize. If you changed VerticalAlingment to Center, then the default ResizeDirection would know to resize by row.
